Health Insurance - Individual Coverage

Many individual and/or families simply do not have access to a group health plan or may choose to pursue an individual plan for other reasons. Individual plans are available and work well in many instances for independent contractors, seasonal employees, part-time workers, children, young adults and persons who are in between jobs.

There are many reputable carriers available in the individual market. Underwriting is a key element of an individual application. The carriers generally review medical history factors very carefully, reviewing prescription medication taken on a regular basis, past and present medical conditions that resulted in surgical procedures, as well as any upcoming procedures that a person has already been advised by a medical professional to have performed.

Private carriers can either rate a policy at a higher level than normal based on various levels of risk or they can decline a person for coverage. However, for the most part, they want your business and will make every reasonable effort to insure you and your family.

The coverage on individual plans is very similar to group coverage. The differences are in the underwriting process because the carrier is only dealing with your medical needs as opposed to a mixture of employees with various needs and perhaps differing age levels.
